Reduction and Oxidation Processes of Chromium in Soils

چکیده
The kinetics of reduction and oxidation of soluble chromium in various soils (peat, clay, sand, and luvi-chromic cambisols) were studied at constant soil moisture and constant temperature. A total of 1500 g of each soil was incubated with different concentrations of aqueous solutions of K2Cr2O7 or CrCl3 [1-1000 μg (g of dry soil)-1]. The total exchangeable chromium and Cr(VI) were analyzed in soil extracts over a period of up to 10 days. The parameters influencing the reduction and oxidation of soluble chromium were studied. Reduction of soluble chromium was observed in all the soils examined. It depends mostly on the content of organic matter, on the concentration of the added chromium, and on the pH of the soil. Up to 3 days of the experiment, the reaction was found to be firstorder with respect to Cr(VI). Oxidation of soluble chromium was observed especially in soils high in manganese(IV) oxides and low in organic matter. The oxidation of added soluble chromium did not occur in peat soil. The results indicate that the oxidation and reduction of soluble chromium added to soils depends on the soil structure and on the reduction/oxidation conditions in the particular soil.

Chromium cycling in soils and water: links, gaps, and methods.
The major links in the cycling of chromium in soils and in natural waters are between chromium(III) and chromium (VI). Between the larger links are lesser links involving processes of mobilization and oxidation of CrIII and reduction of CrVI. The gaps are mainly in our understanding of the factors that control these processes. If soluble CrIII is added to an "average" soil, a portion of it will...
متن کاملReduction kinetics of hexavalent chromium in soils and its correlation with soil properties.
The toxicity of chromium (Cr) to biota is related to its chemical forms and consequently to the redox conditions of soils. Hexavalent Cr[Cr(VI)] may undergo natural attenuation through reduction processes. In this study, the reduction kinetics of Cr(VI) in seven soils and its relationships with soil properties were investigated with laboratory incubation experiments. The results indicate that t...

متن کاملOxidation-reduction transformations of chromium in aerobic soils and the role of electron-shuttling quinones.
Oxidation of Cr(III) and reduction of Cr(VI) can occur simultaneously in aerobic soils, but the mechanisms involved are not well-understood, especially how electron shuttling by redox-active organic acids is involved. A and B soil horizons from three topohydrosequences from the Coastal Plain and Piedmont physiographic provinces of Maryland were chosen to investigate oxidation-reduction transfor...

The mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 was covalently grafted with 3-chloropropyl trimethoxylsilane and then was reacted with [Cr(salpr)(H2O)]Cl, (salpr = N,N'-bis(3-salicylidenaminopropyl)amine) to afford MCM-41 containing Cr(salpr) moiety, Cr(salpr)MCM-41. Powder X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses revealed that not only the textural characteristics of the support wer...
